The Independent
Recording Network was started in 2006 by Glen
Stephan, a digital media engineer with several decades of
professional experience in audio and video recording, editing and
mixing, computer programming, and website development and management. It
started simply as a web-based repository where Glen could publish and
distribute his own custom computer programming applets
and tutorials to assist the new generation of independent music
recorders and "home studio" owners with whom he conversed and
built relationships with on many of the related on-line forums. It quickly became apparent that many of this new generation of independent studio owners and music producers are coming into this avocation armed with far more myth and misinformation from unreliable Internet sources and sales and marketing hype, and far less solid knowledge of professional tips and techniques than they realize. As the number of professional "big box" studios dwindles every day to be greatly replaced by smaller and cheaper home project studios, and as the generation of professional audio engineers slowly drifts into retirement to be replaced by the new generation of independent recorders, there is a real danger that much of the techniques, knowledge and experience of the professionals will be lost or forgotten, with the newer myths and hype taking their place in the wikiality or "common knowledge" of the Internet age. With this situation in mind, and with the help of a few fellow and experienced associates, the IRN website is expanding into a full-featured, low-noise, high-signal source of quality information and central networking station for the independent recording community. Here is where there are no supposed "professional secrets" kept from the "newbs", where marketing hype and public myths are examined and busted, and where a mature and professional respect for the human techniques of engineering is emphasized and taught. If there are any topics you'd like to see us address or any questions you'd like answered, please e-mail IRN here. Or to send an email to any one of IRN's individual contributors, you can find an entire list of e-mail links on our Input/Output page. Our website can only be as successful as our visitors and members are happy, so please do not hesitate to contact us. We really do want to hear your ideas. |
