Studio Monitor Hype
By Editor's Desk on August 18 2008 12:00 AM | Permalink | Author Info
The phrase "studio monitor" has a wonderful ring to it, doesn’t it? In the field of audio production, perhaps no other two words combined roll off the tongue with the combination of elegance, magic and power of the phrase “studio monitor”. There’s only one problem with this idealized view: It's not real.

Yet the noise of myth and misunderstanding surrounding the subject is deafening. In his new series of articles on studio monitors, Glen Stephan hopes to de-mystify and de-myth-ify the subject of studio monitors. Starting off in Part 1: What does it mean - or perhaps not really mean - when a speaker is officially labeled as a "studio monitor"?

This time in Part 2 he finishes up with a detailed examination of many of the more misunderstood yet incredibly useful numbers found on such sheets. Click here to view this article.

After breaking away with his article on using parametric equalizers for cleaning the tone of your tracks, Glen Stephan returns with his next installment in his EnginEARing series on developing critical listening skills. This time he finishes up his examination of listening bias and how inherent rookie biases regarding music genres and professional recordings can distract us from developing impartial and discriminating engineer's ears.
