 When independent recordists are faced with monitor selection, the questions usually comes up, “Should I buy a subwoofer, and if so, which one?” In this fourth and final installment in his series on choosing and installing studio monitors, author Glen Stephan takes a simple look at the oft-controversial subject of subwoofers in the studio.This article looks at under what conditions we actually need a subwoofer, why specifications are particularly important in selecting the right subwoofer for us, how to read and use some key specifications for this selection, and some examples of real world subwoofers and how they differ in performance and preferred use.
