"gain structure" refers to the audio signal level or gain
settings on each piece of hardware and software from beginning to end of
the recording chain. Good gain structure typically means setting these levels to get the best balance of high signal and low noise, without sacrificing the headroom needed to capture the full dynamic range. Achieving this balance throughout the signal chain is key to getting the most out of our gear and for recording the best tracks we can.
